Gene S. Winter was a partner at St. Onge for over 40 years until his passing in May 2023.

During his time with the firm, Mr. Winter was lead counsel in numerous patent, trademark and copyright litigations and practices in a wide variety of technologies including mechanical, computer and chemical arts. Mr. Winter was lead counsel in both bench and jury trials, selected juries, and has successfully defended against patent assertion entities and obtained multi-million dollar jury verdicts. He has successfully argued appeals in the Federal Circuit on computer and mechanical patents and argued both second and ninth circuit cases relating to trademarks and copyrights.

In the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, Mr. Winter was lead counsel in Patent Office interparty proceedings and multiple patent reexamination and inter-partes review proceedings. In addition, he handled numerous trademark oppositions and cancellation proceedings.

He managed large international portfolios of patents and trademarks for publicly traded companies and other substantial entities; and consulted with buyers, sellers and their attorneys on the intellectual property concerns of merger and acquisition deals.

He was a past President of the Connecticut Patent Law Association.
